picture here is we need new we're trying to invent new types of taxes a reinstate older taxes to new technology to fund war or to fund big government programs the first thing we need to do is get rid of a lot of programs including military spending and then we can see how many of these taxes we really need but i'm against that it's not a free market principle obviously to tax transactions and not just what people make from them i wouldn't say we're funding big government programs we don't have enough money right now to fund the basic programs that were created out of the new deal that everybody overwhelmingly supports like social security like i mean well that's funded but i mean all these other social welfare programs that people don't want to get rid of we don't have the money to and it's an issue of fairness here and somebody want to get rid of this elude to the new deal was a lot broader than what i would consider to be some government some people not all but if you would have asked people you know decades ago republicans decades ago they were thought it was crazy that people would want to

now, we live in of course in an age of changing, changing -- changing technology. let me make two more points about young people. let me tell you two stories about poland. we were in poland i think eight years ago in september. i was going to visit the supreme court in poland, and when you go to european countries you have to go to three sub green card office. -- three the supreme court offices. decoder three dinners and you bring three gifts. [laughter] but they are fine judges and a fine court system. we were first teaching in krakÓw for a few days and then we went to warsaw. and i had arranged to meet with faculty at the university of warsaw. and to explain to me that the students would not be there because this was the third week in september. i don't think they were come into the first week of october, but the fact he was going to be there. they arranged for me to meet with faculty, and we did. midway through the meeting though there's no spinning past and they said oh, justice kennedy, we didn't realize our answering law students are here for an orientation
